Undecided Question: What is the best way to learn HVAC?

Scott A Asked: Undecided Question: What is the best way to learn HVAC?

I am interested in learning HVAC and working in the field. I have been working in construction (remodeling mostly) for over 10 years. I learned by working with other contractors and went to work for myself eventually. I just started looking into schools for HVAC training and spoke to someone from an online school that said I could have a diploma in as little as 2- 6 months. I asked about hands on training and he said that I should call around and find a company that will take me in as an intern to work for free for awhile and that should lead to regular employment after I finsh with the class. This seems really to learn HVAC to me. I was wondering if it is better to go to a trade school for a year or so, or if the online school would be ok. Also is it possible to get a company to bring me on as an intern and work for free for a period of time to learn with out the school and studying on my own? I think with my backround in construction and remodeling I could learn quickly and also be helpful with any kind of repair work that might be needed if framing or drywall work is needed on a job. I appreciate any advise that may be helpful. Thanks

Should I have my furnace repaired if the heating technician said the boiler is leaking inside the bu

debodun Asked: Should I have my furnace repaired if the heating technician said the boiler is leaking inside the bu

I have an ancient furnace – it was there when my parents bought the house in 1975 and who knows how long it was there before that, but from the retro look of it, probably installed anywhere from the 40s through the 50s. It is an oil fueled hot water delivery system. Now that is is getting down in the 30s at night, I expected the furnace to kick in, but yesterday morning it was really cold in the house. Since I lave the thermostat on 62, I turned it up – and up – and up, but the furnace didn't start. I called the service that usually takes care of my furnace and the technician looked at it. He hit the reset button and it started, however it ran about 20 seconds and shut off. After about an hour of tinkering, the tech reported that the boiler was leaking inside into the burner and I needed a new stack switch or the burner would just keep cycling on and off because of the faulty switch. The stack switch would cost about $100, but with the boiler leaking, he couldn't guarantee that even that repair would last. I asked about fixing the leak in the boiler and he said he couldn't do anything about it right away, but it was a dangerous situation because if cold water leaked into the burner when it was hot, it could make the furnace explode! I am in a quandary now – is he saying things to panic me into having a thousand dollar repair done, should I just have the stack switch replaced, or what?

HVAC-Why Is Furnace Blowing Cold Air when set to Heat?

Teddybear Asked: HVAC-Why Is Furnace Blowing Cold Air when set to Heat?

My Bryant 90 Plus gas furnace model # 399AAV failed to light and produce heat. No problems with blower all summer since it is connected to the CAC system.Switch over to test the heating system and while blower comes on it only lasts 3 minute and shuts off. System seems to try and ignite but cuts out after three (3) minutes.Thermostat is working, I reset furnace by shutting off electric circuit breaker, turned off gas, in hopes of relighting. No luck. Again furnace ran, blew cold air and shut off. Trying to save on repairs by DIY. Any thoughts on what may be the cause? Unable to find a clear printed manual.

Thank in advance

fan in a lennox pulse furnace wont kick on?

Country Boy Asked: fan in a lennox pulse furnace wont kick on?

We have a lennox pulse furnace in our house and it has been getting really hot in the house. We finally found out the fan wasnt kicking on. When power is fed to the furnace there is a hum from the the fan area, I cant tell if its the motor or the pack mounted on the housing of the squirel cage. I am a DIY'er so I would like to try and fix it myself before I call an HVAC person.

The AC turns on fine but the fan does not.

Charge on each plate?

sis poplar Asked: Charge on each plate?

A parallel plate capacitor has a potential difference of 120 V maintained across the plates. With an air-gap the charge on each plate is 12 C. A dielectric slab with dielectric constant of 3.0 is then inserted completely filling the gap. What is charge on each plate in this new condition?

Should I worry about a slight warming on my circuit breaker box?

Trini beach Boy Asked: Should I worry about a slight warming on my circuit breaker box?

Normally I would not worry about it but my friend is concerned that when we have large appliances on such as air condition units, electric stove or water heater the junction box where all the breakers for the house are experiences a slight increase in temperature. It does not really get hot but it just feels a little warmer than when the appliances are off. I put it down to simply to the fact that electricity is passing through the breakers when the appliances are on.

Is there any cause for concern?

Partial Pressure of Water Vapor in Atmosphere?

Justin Asked: Partial Pressure of Water Vapor in Atmosphere?

Question: The vapor pressure is the pressure of the vapor phase of a substance when it is in equilibrium with the solid or liquid phase of the substance. The relative humidity is the partial pressure of water vapor in the air divided by the vapor pressure of water at that same temperature, expressed as a percentage. The air is saturated when the humidity is 100%.

A) The vapor pressure of water at a temperature of 20.0 Degrees C is 2340 Pa . If the air temperature is 20.0 Degrees C and the relative humidity is 44.0 % , what is the partial pressure of water vapor in the atmosphere (that is, the pressure due to water vapor alone)?

p =____ Pa

B) Under the conditions of part (a), what is the mass of water in a volume of 1.60 m cubed of air? (The molar mass of water is 18.0 g/mol. Assume that water vapor can be treated as an ideal gas.)

m= ____g

Attempt: I am not sure how to go about this kind of a problem. I realize that we're dealing with the pressure of water vapor, but I don't understand how to actually go about the problem. Is the vapor pressure of water at 20 degrees C or does it sound more like the air temperature is at 20 degrees C and you have to figure out what the new pressure of the water vapor is at that air temperature? If someone wouldn't mind a detailed explanation of this problem it would be greatly appreciated!
